You may have come across a bold claim circulating in the oral care world: "Anything under 10% nano-hydroxyapatite doesn't remineralize teeth." It sounds authoritative. It's also a misreading of the research.

First, what is nano-hydroxyapatite?

Nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) is a synthetic form of the same mineral that makes up approximately 97% of your tooth enamel. When applied topically—as in a toothpaste—it fills microscopic surface defects, acts as a scaffold for natural mineral deposition, and helps restore the crystalline structure of enamel. It's one of the most thoroughly studied fluoride alternatives in modern dentistry, with a strong track record in both clinical and laboratory research.

What the research actually found

The study most frequently cited in support of the "10% rule" compared nano-hydroxyapatite concentrations of 1%, 5%, 10%, and 15% in a controlled laboratory setting. Here's a plain-language summary of the findings:
